![]() ![]() ![]() Second, we have the photography enthusiast looking for a smaller back up to complement their existing digital SLR. First, there’s the beginner wanting to take better pictures than their current auto-everything model will allow. If so, the much brighter lens on the XZ-1 goes a long way to compensate for its inferior sensor since the XZ-1 can shoot at lower ISO values to get the same exposure levels as the E-PL1 with kit lens - and get similar quality. With the release of what is arguably its first ‘high performance’ pocket compact in the 10-megapixel, 4x optical zoom XZ-1, Olympus is trying to target – and moreover enthuse – two distinct groups of photographer. To get similar exposure level, with the E-PL1, could I set ISO on the XZ-1 at 400? Aperature at F1.8 (about 2 stops brighter than the E-PL1's brightest setting with kit lens). Focal length at 6mm (28mm equivalent for FF). Now I'm using the XZ-1 on the same scene. I'm taking a picture indoors with the E-PL1 with stock 14-42mm lens set at 14mm (28mm equivalent for FF) with aperture F3.5 and shutter at 1/60. One scenario I'm wondering about is this: I'm sticking with EPL1 for quality pics, phone cam for random social shots, and camcorder for anything that needs lots of zoom or has action. After you take pictures with m4/3 and 20mm f1.7, you may never want to go back to a P&S. Fast lens and Olympus colors are good things. Anything less rarely works for pictures of my kids I'm a little worried about its auto mode not keeping shutter speed at 1/60 though. Or give the XZ1 to my wife to replace the Fuji F31 (another "big sensor" P&S). my point is that your scenario is worst case for EPL1 and in better light or better lens I suspect the gap will widen.Īnyway, I seriously thought about selling my kit lens and buying XZ1, then use it outdoors or when traveling light, and use EPL1+20mm for indoors or more important events. What I concluded was that when conditions were dark enough to need 1600 with kit lens, I would tend to add some fill flash and set ISO to 400 or sometimes 800, and situations where I could not flash (kids at aquarium, or baby closeup) I needed the 20mm AND 1600 or higher ISO. I went back through many of my shots to see if I fell into that category. then XZ1 is tempting, especially with the AF assist light. If someone wanted a cam that would primarily be used in that setting, without flash, and they either need wide/zoom or cannot afford the 20mm F1.7 for the EPL1. Impressive that the XZ1 appears to come pretty close. Summary of long thread, yes, 2 stops, so in your scenario you can compare ISO 400 to 1600. You can find the thread by me in the micro four thirds forum. I have an EPL1, and was curious about your same question. Most people will not see a difference: a professional peeper will ! Go to the last page of DPReview of each camera: a group of pictures are shown Įnlarge them on your screen and see what you think smaller sensor, less detail available although both cameras do the job that they are capable of ! Someone is bound to do it sooner or later, I await with bated breath. Like I said though, we need a real comparison. Let's lens changing and very close image quality. Even DPReview questioned the merits of m43 with a standard zoom kit compared to the XZ-1.Įven if you have an EPL-1, it may be better to spend a bit more and buy an XZ-1 instead of the zoom kit. Lastly, as the saying goes, the best camera is the one you have with you and the significantly smaller size of the XZ-1 compared to an EPL-1 with a zoom means that the XZ-1 will most likely end up with you on more trips. The difference doesn't appear to be huge though, but I would still enjoy seeing a real world test where the two cameras are pitted against each other in the same exact scenarios. The XZ-1 appears to be a great camera but I think the EPL-1 with a standard zoom still produces better pictures and you don't have to pixel peep to see it. ![]() For example, is the light gathering ability in the F/1.8 on the XZ-1 equal to a F/1.8 on an EPL1 at the same focal length? I'm interested in knowing myself.Īlso, I think the XZ-1 ISO 400 looks better than the EPL. Actually, I think what he's asking is if the aperture numbers on a smaller sensor camera is equal in light gathering ability to a larger sensored camera. ![]()
